Nice to meet you. is the formal greeting in US. I you want to he informal or walking by a person just say Hi How are you?, but do not expect an answer just keep walking and smile. Tend to look away right after you say so. (If you say that and wait for an answer they think your weird). Also you can just say Hi first and wait for they to ask you (Hi, how are you?) When they do just smile or say good and you fast if you know the person. If not just smile and look away. You can also say "nice weather, crappy weather, it's cool today" If you see some interest from them. But they only want to talk about weather and you saying you feel great." Please do not say you feel sad, worried, bored, nothing negative. They don't want to here it. I promise. Good luck
