I am aware that these are poisonous to animals particularly horses and cows and mainly cause problems when made in to hay. I want to know what animals i can safely have on this land without causing them problems. Can anything stomach these plants as i would prefer them to be eaten down. There is little grass in this area and the horsetails have completely taken over most of the ground. I am at the moment at a loss as to what to do with it! Any sensible suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A couple of goats would work fine to my knowledge!

If there is little grass you wont have enough nutrition for any animal. You could put pigs in they will root them up and kind of clear the land for you. they do a real nice job on things you dont want on your land. But you will need to feed something else to any animal you put there. What about bush hogging the horse tail? and then discing and putting in grass seed so that in a few years you will have a nice pasture.

Great question...and a tough one....what about goats?..Not sure if horsetails are safe for goats but it seems as though the can stomach just about all else....A call to your local vet will probably answer the question

Before you start grazing animals why not spend a little time doing pasture improvement? Your local county extension agent can be a big help there.

I say use president Bushes approach. Send as many animals at the problem as you can and those that survive are keepers.
