My first job offer was through an agency. They got me a job but offer was terrible - minimum salary for graduate $1400, asked for fee and wanted to keep my passport !?! Good job I didn't sign the contract.

My first thought is if the company terminates you before the 3 years will you still have to pay the $24k or pro-rated to the agency? Read through your contract for the details. Unless your agency have a really good reason getting you to pay e.g. paid for your training etc.. Otherwise it is unfair. A contract is an agreement and by law should be fair to both sides.

Legal, illegal, unfair or fair - I would go to Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to enquire and see if these kind of contracts are allowed. By doing this, you would have also alerted the government about your agency and may do some investigation. Also you will know where you stand with regards to the contract.

The stipulations in the contract is binding when you signed it. The contract is not unfair because it is for three (3) years and 24,000 Singapore dollars is not unconscionable within the said period.

Fair or not a contract is a contract and probably has a clause for remedys for the end of that contract. Work with the agency and see if you can negoite a new contract or try to find a way to change the contract. If not you are stuck. Remember when you sign you are giving your word, and that should mean something to you. Be careful when you give your word. It something that shouldn't be taken lightly.

Hunderd percent fair and according to the law unless and untill when you signing that contract these things were mentione, if these are not mentioned in the written form, no body can sue you on verbal details

Now you ask. If you signed it, you made it legal by agreeing to contract.
