I would have to say classical by far. Music like pop and rock have distracting beats and you sometimes strain to hear the lyrics.

I find just about anything accompanied with a piano, cello, or violin to be calming and relaxing.
I personally find these songs especially relaxing:
"Blessing in Disguise" by Lamb
"Into Dust" by Mazzy Star
"Baby Let Me" and "Feeling of Gaze" by Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions
"Cities Will Fall" by Elysian Fields
"La Femme d'Argent" by Air
"Those Crimson Tears" by Ed Harcourt
"Drake" by Beth Gibbons & Rustin' Man

Are you searching for bands?
Try Enya, Delerium, or the Cocteau Twins.
All three are very ethreal... which is a soft trance-like music.
