It would help to ban the names Scotland, Wales, Britain and UK and just call the whole thing England. It's easier for foriegners to understand and would only require 1 government. Also, this means no Welsh or Scottish teams, and the whole island can unite. We can also include N.Ireland if they like.

sargent - keep it simple for everyone and call them regions. Scotland is a country and what we're discussing is taking the country status away. Am I going too fast for you?

I think these are examples Spain and Catalonia, France and Brittany. Tell me if I'm wrong.

Brian7Mcdee - You found me out, I'm just stirring and keeping Scottish nationilism alive. I wondered if I could get any Scotsman to agree to this. After all if we where a country we could vote for it at the polls but chose not to. Vote SNP!

Obviously a question to stir up emotions among the Celtic few of us. Look, if thats your idea of your nation then thats fine. Just remember Scottish oil runs this nation of yours, even in history who provided all the warships to help defend little London - the bonnie banks of the Clyde. Plus if you take out London, you don't really have anything for tourists to visit, more tourists visit Scotland & Ireland in proportion to the land mass we both have. Its just a pity that the UK is a sham anyway, a union of 4 countries can only have an English PM. You must be one of the Eng-er-land generation.

We are united already, that's why it's called the UNITED Kingdom. Further more, like England, Scotland is a country in it's own right, with Wales being a principality. Only Ulster, Northern Ireland, is a province. If foriegners have touble understaning that, then it's thier problem not ours. Leave well alone I say.

No, I think it's silly... I quite like how Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England comes together to make the United Kingdom - it sounds ACE! If anything I'd rather have the Scottish Government, they're banning cigarettes first!

80% of the UK population is English, and we are where all the money comes from, so to those that said it, it doesn't make sense to amalgamate England into the Celtic nations. We beat the welsh out of what is now England, and we have been the predominant nation ever since. Their civilisations aren't older either, the Germanic civilisations from whence we came are just as old, they've just lived in Britain longer.

But no, I don't think your idea should happen, we are English, they are Scots, neither side wants the Scots to be called English.

quite simply no, this should not happen, i am not going to go into a long winded explanation about the reasons, and it certainly should not be done because of tourists, it would be the equivalent of the USA saying to Canadians lets just get rid of your countries name and you can be part of the USA.
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland make up what is the UK and they are four very different, proud and historic countries and if tourists come to visit the UK then it is our duty to inform them of the cultures and differences of the peoples that live and work here.
As for a UK football team it just wouldn't work at all, there would be civil war over the team selection and it makes me feel sick at the thought of it, and of course it wouldn't just stop at the football teams.
I better stop writing now or i will start to go on about the 'declaration of abroath' which you may or may not be aware of.

The Welsh, Scottish & Irish nations are OLDER than England so maybe you English should be amalgimated into the Celtic race. The Celtic race are the true Britons. The Celts were here long before the English, who are known as the bastard race due to the fact they are made up of French, German, Nordic etc.....Now be a good little boy and go & shite!

Scotland is a region within the U.K.

Using your logic, why not call the U.K. Scotland? Or Wales? Or N.Ireland?

I can't wait to see some answers to this from people outside England!!!!

It would also help to ban states in America and just call it America. But you don't see that happening.
Scotland is a country. Wales is a country. England is a country. United they are the United Kingdom. Really is not that hard to understand.

wales and Scotland are countries. you don't see France and Spain unite. (call it sprance) or the whole of Europe. if this happened people will lose their identity. together we are the united kingdom and i think that's the way it should stay.

oh I'm not Scottish, I'm English. i see a lot of Scots being peeved about this idea!

It would be easier, but it would be WRONG. Why don't we combine Mexico, the US of A and Canada while we're at it and just call the whole thing America?

If I had any Gaelic, I'd curse you soundly in it.

Benton: You said you couldn't wait to see answers from people outside of the UK? Well, this is one of them.

...By the by... I think the first answer is the best.. great timing too!
