Today my 8 month old went to the doctor and he heard a heart murmur. She is a thriving active healthy little girl. he suspects its innocent or benine, he is sending us to a cardiologist to be on the safe side. I'm petrified, absolutely petrified, i can't breate, exhale until I know its fine. I would appreciate any info on it, personal experience would be great.

oh sweetie, I can imagine how u feel, we were told this when our princess was just 2 months old and it turned out to be an 'innocent' murmur. I coulnd't breathe either .. I was numb. Whatever anyone may say you will feel better only once u are told that all is well and normal, so unfortunately you will have to live with this anxiety till u meet the doc. but I swear its very normal for babies to have a murmur, their hearts are still developing, 90% are innocent/benign and I AM SURE your daughter's will be too, try to calm yourself a bit, for her sake, she can sense her mom's fear. my advice would be to do all the fun things u guys do together (to get ur mind off all this) and DONT read about the condition on the net, we are laypeople - we only get more confused and frightened, so limit your exploration of this topic. have faith in your god, in your doctor and in yourself. Bless you and again - it will be fine.

My daughter was born with VSD which is a type of murmur. They said that she would outgrow it by her first birthday. Which she did outgrow the VSD. She still has a murmur and always will but the actual disease that makes her take antibiotics she doesn't have anymore. I was petrified because they told me at the hospital when she was born. I had to go see the card when she was 4 days old and have all of those tests done to my new little baby. I bawled and thinking of it I still do. It could be because I am pregnant again. Just think of it this is your baby and they are saying something may be wrong, even though they say it is innocent you think of the worst. Come on now anything dealing with the heart and a child freaks anyone out. Just try to calm down and don't get scared. It isn't something deadly and to be honost I would say that about half of the world has them. They are more common than you think. Just don't freak out like I did when they do an EKG. Also they may do an ECHO which is an ultrasound of the heart.

I have a heart murmur and didn't find out until I was 21 that I have it. My Mom knew I had it from birth but didn't want it to affect how I behaved as a child. I have always been extremely active. I am now 37 and still going strong! My 2nd son was born with a heart murmur and the doctors told me not to worry that most children will grow out of it. But even if they don't (like me) it's not the end of the world. Since I didn't even know I had one and never felt that anything was wrong it didn't hold me back at all.

Many babies out grow heart murmurs. My mom did not, but she has had 2 heart surgeries in 56 years and will never need another, she is healthy and lives an active life. I know of several people with murmurs that nothing happens, they occasionally have to take blood thinners and their lives are normal.

I have a heart murmur and so does my dad. I don't notice it except the dentist makes you take antibiotics before they clean your teeth sometimes. No big thing.
