I had my surgery last monday, i was starting to feel better, less and less pain. Now, just starting yesterday, 5 days after my surgery, the left side of my throat hurts when absoultely anything goes down. Especially the pain medicine. Is this normal? Is the scab coming off and thats why it hurts so much, or should i call the doctor?

It takes 72 hours after any surgery or trauma for the tissue to begin to heal a cut or break in the tissue... that is 3 days... and for your tonsil area to heal after 5 days... it is normal to still have soreness in swallowing as you say... "on one side..." as that may have been the difficult side to remove the tonsil from... so it could take longer to really heal. As for the scabs... do not try to loosen the scabs ... let them heal and fall off on their own as it may result in a bleeding site which could become a hemorrhage... that is what happened to my tonsillectomy site when I was 9 years old... and I had to be rushed back to the hospital one week after the surgery to have stitches taken in that area of my throat... I was not a happy camper, I will tell you... So continue to eat cream type soups, poached eggs, and ice cream... and malted milks and jellos... etc... and wait until you can swallow without pain for eating regular diets again...and .. don't yell... be patient... it won't take too long now. I also am a nurse... for many, many years... :)

I know it's harder the older you are when you have the procedure done. I had mine out when I was nine. I don't remember much except it sucked. My son, he's five, just had his taken out 3 weeks ago. I kept up with the pain meds and bought soft foods--he likes watermelon-helps to keep you hydrated too. Also the Dr suggested chewing bubblegum for the ear pain you mention since the nerve that runs along the area of the throat affected by the tonsils to the ear. You may want to try that. We were also told cold items like Popsicles and ice cream help a lot or drinks that have carbonation. My son did not lose much weight. He is a big fan of chocolate milk too, but found that it made him a little too phlegmy. He ate a lot of watermelon and drank a lot of coke. He would eat the watermelon right before bed-I don't know if that would help you or not. I know most people say the faster you eat, the faster the recovery. I don't know how true that is. You may want to check in with your doctor in regards to your pain meds as you may have another bad day when the scabs fall off. Wish you the best of luck in your recovery.

Absolutely call the doctor. The older you are when you have a tonsilectomy the harder it is. There may be a small irriation or infection starting. Call to be safe.

Call the doctor sounds like you have an infection.
