It depends on what kind of data you are looking, If you are looking for Temporary files used by windows, than it is stored in the following folder.
D:\Documents and Settings\[USER Account Name]\Local Settings\Temp
If you are looking for the Internet Files,
D:\Documents and Settings\[USER Account Name]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
Most of the data is also stored in RAM(Random Access Memory), but it is deleted as soon as you exit the program or shut down the computer. You cannot access the data of RAM.

In a combination of your RAM and hard drive (virtual memory). When what you are working on takes up all the RAM memory space, the memory manager moves some things temporarily to the hard drive until you need it again. This is one reason computers with more RAM run faster. The less it has to store on the HD, the faster it can access the information.
When surfing WEB pages, information is stored as files on your HD under Temporary Internet Files..or cache. This way information can load quicker if you switch between pages.
