Because there would be no protection for women in co-ed bathrooms. I lived in a co-op once where the bathrooms were integrated, because the place was converted from a sorority house, and there was one large bathroom on each floor. But then we all knew each other, and if someone got out of line, we could throw him out of the house. You would have no such protection in a public restroom.
Where there is only one toilet, and each person locks the door, there is no harm in having only one bathroom. So presumably if you wanted to eliminate the difference (why?), you could just build a public building with a whole lot of individual, lockable bathrooms. The problem there, of course, would be the security: junkies going in there to shoot up, and people getting sick, etc.
At the grocery store where I normally shop, there is one bathroom and they keep it locked. You have to ask one of the clerks to let you in, and there is a dead bolt lock on the inside that does not seem to be related to the key mechanism. I wonder what they will do the first time someone goes in there and does not come out?

Simple.
Biologically, they're different so they need different facilities to accomodate their wastage.
Privacy is yet another thing to think about. If we both have the same thing, it's not that big a deal but if we're different, there are some things I'd rather keep to myself, thank you.
Also, for safety. Ladies have a place where they can relieve themselves without fear of men barging in on their modesty while men, especially those with a potentially unnatural love for the feminine figure, can relieve themselves without being tempted.

Apart from privacy and the need to feel safe when partly exposed, i think it's vital that our children (especially young girls ) arent exposed to the opposite sex in the toilet. At least women go into a toilet & shut the door, but if we had unisex toilets us women would have to put up with stinky urinals, wolf whistles, sexual remarks (i'm not saying all males would be like this) and neither myself nor my daughters should have to put up with any of the above

No, its not just in the US. Males and females have seperate bathrooms in almost in all countries. At least here in India they do. Actually women need some extra privacy.

The feeling of modesty.
Who wants to be seen with their pants down while relieving yourself anyway.
There will probably be more rapes if there were unisex toilet facilities. So it's best to keep them separate either way.

This might be the trend in Europe, but I doubt that co-ed bathrooms will catch on here in the states.

Because that aspect of life is one that we wish din't exist and it helps to deny it. Besides there would be problems for most people. I am glad its that way.
