before one can fully decipher his own freedom, one must first understand the meaning of it. Freedom is the act of doing good proceeding your will at the right place and time.
An example is a rapist. He raped a girl because it does good to him ehich means it satisfies his sexual need. Yet, as for the girl, her freedom is violated since she does not want to do it. This is why we create laws. Because most of the times, we abuse our freedom to the point that the freedom of others are being stepped on.
Norms change together with the values of the society. It is never permanent except for the 10 commandments of which is applicable to any religion, country and society. Conforming to the norms doesn't necessary mean that your freedom is given boundaries, it is just that, we should respect other's freedom also.
Hope to have helped you!

In all reality we are not free. However we choose our captivity, And our captors are just as captive as we are, because they were once us. What other choice is there, if you don't take a role what else are you going to do? And as far norms, the system has the abilty to adapt to new norms so that even the odd ones fill a norm slot/role. You are here to serve a purpose to the whole, it is a well designed system that has developed over a long time, its genesis began before plato wrote "the republic".

Only as free as our heart and minds allow us to be. Confirming norms and roles definitely play a part in encumbering one from living totally free to disregard the negative beliefs of those who are so wound up in appearances for that sake only....

Freedom is the ability to make well informed choices for yourself, with much of the information being manipulated and/or withheld, I don't think we're free at all. Being able to vote in a rigged election is not democracy. Being threatened with confinement and torture for dissent is not a trait found in my notion of freedom. Wage slavery, limited opportunities, and a culture that values superficiality over character, all stand as testaments to what this country has become. America the horrible. I want my country back.

I agree with Skinner on the matter, but you really have to understand where he is coming from, it's not just about rats and pigeons, from the first moment on you can never be certain that it's not the operants in life guiding you.

We are not really free. WE are chained to our jobs, the IRS, our spouses, our children, our responsibilities. We will be free when we leave this earth.
