For research paper purposes...

direct quotation is when you take a sentence or two from someone else's work (article, book, whatever) and use it word for word. This has to be done using quotes and making an indication of some type (parenthetical notes, end notes, foot notes, etc).

indirect quotation is when you take an idea, a fact, some sort of information...from someone else's work (article, book, whatever) and while the idea was someone else's...you rewrite it in your own words--paraphrase it. You would still need to indicate where you got it by using parenthetical notes, end notes, or foot notes.

You would need to cite the author and title and year in either case and include the page number for a direct quote.
