There is no violence in *real* gothic music.

The metal noise out today, such as Cannibal Corpse, Manson, and Cradle of Filth is just considered metal to real goths. We don't claim it as our own. Kids that shop at Hot Topic and don't know any better listen to this metal, and though they say they are goth... it is a passing trend that fades as the next new thing comes along.

Real gothic music (and it's usually formed into sub-categories such as post-punk, dark wave, or death rock) talks about darker subjects, and includes darker imagery... but does not promote violence. It speaks of the romanticism of death, and other such things... sometimes vampires (mostly humourously... such as Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead")... sometimes the dark arts...

We, in fact, are a very genteel people... polite and well-mannered towards society. We tend to dress in the more romantic fashion trends; such as the Victorian era (for example). Most of us are not the violent type, and will stop to help anyone in need. We love art; whether it be music, paintings, literature... and though we dwell on the darker side of life, it's not because we want to hurt ourselves, or anyone else.

Sorry to write so much... but I wanted to clear the air for those of us out here that get a bad rep because of the ignorance of today's youth. (I'm 30 years old, by the way).

I completely agree with you. I have actually never heard of Emo before. The only thing with rap is that it's more popular than any of those other styles. That's probably why it's ratted on more. To me, it's a shame when I hear 6 ,7, 8 year old kids singing the lyrics about sex, hoes and drugs. They don't even know what they're talking about. I look at lyrics before I judge a song. I don't care if you're rapping about your momma or even Jesus. There's actually a lot of really good Christian rappers out there. It's when you get into the xxx stuff, that it turns me off.

Emo is not about cutting your wrists, it's mainly about dealing with life's curve balls, Its also directed towards young individuals who really have nothing to look forward to in life due to despair and emptiness . It's a music intended to let young confused kids feel like they are accepted in today's ignorant and violent world.Death metal promotes standing up for your self and what you believe disregarding what other see you as. Techno.... well yeah techno is just gay!. All of the above and more tie together, punk, street punk, grunge, alternative, metal and so on...they are all political, love, life, based. Can you please tell me the last time "my chemical romance" had a shoot out with "the postal service'? or Metallica doing a "drive by" at "cannibal corpse's studio? yeah didn't think so... And if any of these people hurt anyone its' themselves, so if they're stupid enough to commit suicide then they deserve it. I don't remember ever seeing "taking back sunday" performing a song degrading women and calling them Hoes and talking about dealing drugs because they have to have their 28 inch Chrome rims..... Don't get me wrong, i enjoy hip-hop not cheap gold teeth, women degrading, hustling because it;s fun rap. There are great hip-hop bands out there and artist. Talib kweli, the roots, Mos Def, the beat nuts, J5, Dj shadow,KRS-1, and others who know they don't have to degrade anyone to sell their music or even make a stupid song about "getting hot in here"

Because goths, metalheads, and emos don't run around with guns shooting up neighborhoods. Here's the steretype: gangsters listen to rap music. Gangsters do drive bys and other violent acts. Therefore rap is associated with such violence. Besides, the blatant glorification of drug use, gangs, and violence in a some rap music is quite disturbing. You just named off some groups that sound evil?, but have you actually listened to their lyrics? Black Sabbath is old, and their music has a message. War Pigs speaks of the evils of our politicians waging stupid wars. Fairys wear boots isn't about gay bashing its actually Ozzy dissing skin heads. Electric funeral is about the stupidly self destructive nature of humanity's pursuit of nuclear weapons. But I will agree that the other two are rubbish.

I don't know about techno, but the others have all had people complaining and protesting, too. I think rap gets more news because it has a wider audience, and the media figures they can get more reaction by making a fuss over it. It's like, whatever sells advertising.

Today rap is reaching a wider group of people. Other genres can be just as negative. It is true that even though hip hop has artists that do not promote violence the good in hip hop is usually ignored. You want to know why? America and Canada are white countries. We are just living in them. They don't want us to have power. Rap has influence. Influence brings birth to power. Even the squeaky-clean, "I'm not racist...I have black friends." white people do not want to see us in power. No one wants a black President or Prime Minister. They blame rap because it is "black music". They don't want us to be part of the solution so they label us as the problem.

Rap has the whole gangster, gun-toting, jail tatooed, criminal image packaged with it. It's like Boyz in the Hood. That's why it gets the "nag".
