Bush's rating WILL have an effect on whether Republicans vote for another Republican, be it locally or federally.
So yes, his popularity does affect the political future even if he's out of office himself.

Legacy. It's common for many second term presidents to want to leave their "mark", and be concerned with how he will be remembered. I'm not sure Bush cares more than the Republican Party does though. No doubt they are concerned that Bush's popularity (or lack thereof) will jeopardize the Republicans' chances at the polls in the next Presidential election.

Because that is all they care about whether they are popular and it's the called no real knowledge of the situation. You know they have to agree with want Jennifer Aniston and the Dixie Chicks say so they can be cool to. I don't hink George ever cared that much he is there to do a job and that is what is important not whether the Liberal media or the crowd of ego gluttons of Hollywood like him.

Reagan was too old, too senile, he had no idea what was going on. Bush is too stupid, and he has no idea.
Yet Reagan destroyed the Soviet Empire and Bush is destroying the terrorist empire.
Clinton was great (in their minds) but what did he do? What was his legacy? cigars and interns?

Bush doesn't care about anything. Reagan? For real? He could hardly say the word Aids and that's when it became more public.

Does it really matter if he CARES or not? Are you saying it's completely unimportant when 60-70% of the people don't like the President? Maybe that doesn't affect him at all, but should those opinions -- if they're so widespread -- be disregarded?

His popularity affects the party; if people are unhappy with his administration, it might affect the way they'll vote in the upcoming midterm elections. He could lose the Congress.

The president cares about his popularity ratings because he cares about his supporters and his party.
