I saw a v-rod screamingeagle racing bike on vtracegirl.com, the bike discription says it has a locking clutch. I had a ratchet shifter in one of my cars i bought from a guy who raced in the 1/4 mile. does the locking clutch do the same thing as the ratchet shifter

Locking clutch does just what it says, it locks the torque from the engine to the transmission. Normal clutches slowly applies torque for smooth take offs. Hope that's what you were asking.

A standard lever-action clutch system works really well, what it takes is a lot of practice, and maybe some fine adjustment. You can save a lot of money on parts and excess wear by practicing more. There's also centrifugal clutch systems, honda-matic type stuff, that work really well. If you're breaking stuff, look at what you're doing....hot-dogging is hard on the equipment. Smooth shifting and working on your timing works wonders...new engines are also more elastic, meaning they have a longer power-band,
so less shifting to begin with.

you can't shift a manual car if you are not pushing down on the clutch first, when you push the clutch it triggers the transmition and lets you shift into a different gear
