Because sometimes it's nice to try products on other animals before we risk unnecessary human lives.

Any drug or treatment that could potentially be used for human conditions or diseases has to be tested before it can be released into the market. These tests cannot be done on humans for the same reasons as those for the opposition of stem cell research- it is morally wrong, more so, 'coz humans are involved. So, it becomes necessary to have some kind of system for the tests. The following are the possibilities:
a) We could use some Bioinformatics softwares for theoretically visualizing the possible mechanism of drug action and interaction.
b) We could use cell cultures to achieve the same.
But the above methods are not feasible 'coz the drug has to be used ultimately in a living system where there are numerous other reactions and organ systems other than the target ones. These have to be taken into account in order to avoid interference of the drug with other reactions and systems.
So, what we need is a living system, other than a human one, that is similar in composition to humans'. So, we have to use animals. There seems to be no other go.

What you really need to do some research on is on the topic of "model organisms".

Reasons why we don't use humans straight away for testing is because we might not know the toxic effect of drugs on the chemicals that we are using. When we do testing we are concern about the toxicity level and lethal levels of a drug for that matter.

Other reasons why we use animals is because of the similarities they share we us, lower cost, lesser space needed and shorter life cycle. The significance of a shorter life cycle would contribute to more observations on the changes in the next generation espically when you are doing testing on the 2nd or if not 3rd generation in genetical experiments.

Futhermore, some model organisms have more benefit then others such as the zebra fish, which is transparent in nature throughout its life. Thus it would allow us to observe how a yound develops in an egg without the need of disecting it (no killing involve yea!!!).

Normally before choosing a model organism, you need to understand what you are testing for. Drosophilia fruit flies are used to test for inheritance of traits as well as the neurological effect of alcohol. The type of organism you use would improve usually from smaller ones to larger ones like monkey and apes towards the later part of the experiment. This is important because at the final stage when it is applied to humans, we may not have the same immunity to toxins from drugs as some model organisms do, so larger variety is needed. Oh and monkeys and apes could be too costly for practical use, they cost like $1000 each

Many important discoveries that improve our lives come from animal research. I think that it is important to find alternatives to animal research like using cell and tissue culture techniques now that these techniques are available, but ultimately, we still need research animals. Without animal research, we would have very few important medications such as insulin for diabetics, and anti-seizure medicines. We would also not have known the doses that were safe vrs. doses that were lethal or dangerous.

This is a very difficult topic, as animal testing goes against most people's belief systems (including mine). Great question!

There are many disadvantages to using animals in experiments. 1. The animals are put through many painful procedures. For example, there was an experiment that involved putting gorillas in thrombosis (heart attack). Many animals get chemicals sprayed in their eyes. Some animals are infected with diseases to see if a drug works. 2. Human anatomy and animal anatomy are different. What is good medicine for a lab rat is not necessarily good medicine for a human. 3. "Acceptable" experiments may slippery slope into not so acceptable. If it is okay to see if this baby shampoo is safe for eyes, well then lets see if this adult shampoo is. Well since we look to adult shampoo, lets look at hairspray. Well since hairspray in the eyes is acceptable, lets look at spray paint. It gets out of control. Where does it stop. However, I am NOW for animal testing. I was against it before I got pregnant, but now I like knowing that the baby shampoo IS safe for my baby. I like knowing that certain chemicals are non toxic and will not hurt my baby. As one respondent said in his answer, better them than us.

You do realise that humans are animals as well, seeing as that they are not plants or minerals or fungi. Animals are used because most end products are to be used on animals. You cannot determine the efficacy of a substance if you test it on a rock when it is intended for use on a human.

humans n most mammals paticularly th ones neaerer to humans in th evolutionary history , react to chemicalks almost in th same way. so validity or the effect whether fatal or advantageous, of a medicine or a drug or a chemical can be checked effectivly by testing it on experimental animals .lest there should be any problems relating th drug then only th animal is put to the risk not a human being. repeated checking can assure u of the result and then can be doubtlessly administered on a humans without th risk of casuality.

ok guess will any human allow a doc to test new chemicals on them? or will any doc test newer chemicla on humans?
well if he does so and in the process if the human is killed, he will have to serve the charges of a murderer or inefficient handling of patents but in the case of animals he neednot take its permission nor in the process if it gets killed is he eligilible for any puishment. if he succeeds, he will win glory if he loses no problem to anyone then but incase of human if he loses he's gone try it out on humans not until then. i hope this answer was of use :)

In order to learn whether there are adverse effects from using the product. If a product irritates rabbits, it would probably irritate people as well, and it would be good to find this out before bringing it to market.

I believe many ordanry people with pets hurt way more animals then the people that use them for testing drugs and whatnot...That didnt answer the question but hey? What the heck.....
