what years did they make them? also, are they a reliable source of transportation? safety rating?

Villager, 93 to 02 I think , very reliable, had a good rating but don't remember how good

Are you thinking of the Villager ? I think that was the one based on the Nissan Quest. Haynes book says they were made from 1993-2001. I think most of them were, but I also heard some later ones had Ford engines in them, so naturally weren't as reliable.
Safety was probably pretty good. They were probably designed to do more than run into brick walls.
