My Mother served at Millersford Armaments research Department in Wiltshire I believe as her National service in August 1944

Does anyone know how long was requied as national service at that time

It was for the duration of the war and beyond. Troops were demobilized as they could be and released from the service but many were still in uniform two years after the cessation of the conflict.

When you got the call (if you hadn't already volunteered) you were in for the length of the war, and then some.
