it is 2 pains of glass put together to trap a thin layer of air, this causes natural insulation causing the building to keep heat in in the winter and keep a room cold in the summer.

because of the air pocket it also makes the glass very hard to brake which reduces the chance of break ins but will also make it hard to get out of in the event of a fire.

Double glazing reduces sound from the outside world and also will increases the value of your property.

Standard double glazing is quite expensive and it is recommended they should be replaced every 20 years

Air, or any other gas, is a really poor conductor of heat. So two panes of glass separated by a layer of dry (so it doesn't fog up) air, keep the heat in much better than one thin pane of window glass. In really cold places, even poor people pay the extra for them. Windows account for a lot of the heat loss from a house in cold weather. Double glazing is expensive, but it soon pays for itself in lower fuel bills in a cold place.

a pre -sealed unit sometimes in wood, normally Upvc composed as has been said of 2 panes of glass with a gas between them to create an insulating barrier. double glazed window units normally have security features such as locks and partial opening, the Upvc type is long lasting and relatively maintenance free

A window with two panes of glass. It is useful since it has a much better insulating value than a single pane of glass. The dead air space between the two panes of glass slows the conduction of heat. This saves energy and money.

2 panes of glass held close together-sandwiching a layer of air between them. Air works as a natural insulator and helps to keep the heat in in the winter (or the cold in in the summer).

Get a double glazing company to give you a free quote.
A salesman will call and show you a window sample and tell you all about it. He will probably outstay his welcome by several hours and then expect you to sign a purchase contract before he leaves.
