The first thing I would do is reduce stress and avoid triggers for migraines.

Then, assuming you have no health problems aside from migraines, you may want to try the 2 options below.

1) You can try 400 mg of Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin. According to PDRhealth.com, "In an open study, high-dose riboflavin showed significant effectiveness as a migraine prophylaxis. In a subsequent randomized trial, 400 milligrams of riboflavin and placebo were tested for three months in 55 migraine patients. In the riboflavin group, 59% improved by at least 50%, compared with 15% of the placebo group showing at least 50% improvement."

2) You can also try increasing your magnesium intake to about 600 mg/day. You can get magnesium in your foods (such as dark green leafy vegetables, nuts). Also, in addition to diet, you can try magnesium supplements. However, avoid magnesium oxide, since it's not well-absorbed.

Be careful though, too much magnesium at one time can cause diarrhea-- you may need to adjust your dose due to this side effect. Also, watch out for signs of too much magnesium in your body (hypermagnesemia), described here:

I am with you on the Imitrex. I was given some in the emergency room and it didn't work. I don't have insurance, so have to go with what I have in the cabinet. If I have Ibuprofen, I take 400-800 mg and a nap. If I don't have that, I will make a cocktail of other things. I usually keep aspirin and tylenol on hand, so that is usually what the cocktail is...3 aspirin, 2 tylenol (works great for a hangover too :)). Or maybe 3 advil, 2 tylenol. You surely don't want to OD on over the counters, but you do want to knock out the migraine. But, I always have a nap with them, that gets the meds in my system, and relaxation time for me. Do you suffer from any symptoms of depression? I was told by my doctor that the part of the brain that controls your serotonin is right beside the part that triggers a migraine. If you fix your chemical levels, the other stops as well. I am rapid cycle bi-polar and when I started to take the correct medicine, my migraines stopped also. This may not be your position at all, but it worked for me.

as soon as you feel the beginnings of a migraine coming on, take 2 Advil, lie down in a dark quiet room, without interruptions, get lots of rest.

I'm in love with Excedrin Migraine...like I'd marry it if that was legal and not weird...

I agree - excedrin! Also I drink caffeine, avoid arificial sugars, shower & hold ice cube on pain. Good Luck!
