Heraldic research is a science by itself and yes the avenue of studying the coat of arms of clans in europe plays a big part.

Heraldry is not a science, it is an art. It is indeed the study of coats of arms and their history. There are rules for constructing shield designs and other heraldric artifacts, but these are not intended to offer predictive value beyond following the rules of construction.
