I watched an entire NOVA episode on that the other night and the conclusion that they came up with at the end was that since it can't be proven by any present day scientific methods, that it borders on philosophy because there is nothing to back it up and at the present time is merely theory. Of course then people could say it is like what was presented at the beginning of the show where they talked about how Newton very accurately described gravity and its effect, and yet that couldn't be proven at the time. So who knows maybe one day it will come to be proven true. But personally it was something I had to really think about hard and outside the boxes to visualize what they were describing.

I'm very optimistic about String Theory. It just might lead to a unified theory of all.
Neil (above) says it borders on philosophy. Of course it does. It is a theory, a mental exercise at finding a paradigm that explains certain regularities in nature. Maybe that's why scientists become PhD's (Doctors in PHILOSOPHY!).

this theory had been talked about on and of for the past 8 or 9 years, I have yet to pick up on that. But at this stage, it still is a theory.

Which string theory? there are several dozen versions and none of them are sufficiently complete to cover all the possibilities.
