Your employer must have your permission to do this, there is a fee involved and the employer or potential employer pays that.
If you have nothing to hide it is cool, however honesty is the best policy - we all made errors in our youths!

Yes some employer's do check for a criminal records such as the Police, Government departments or say for you were applying to be childminder/look after to children. Any individual/organisation can do this once you filled out your form and this is then passed to the Criminal Records Bureau. You can contact CRB (customer services)on 08709090811.

The legality of doing a criminal check would probably depend on the country or state you're in.
As to how, even if a company doesn't have a well-equipped and staffed human resource dep't whose job it is to check the veracity of applications, they can always hire a contractor like an investigative firm.

would have thought only the police keep criminal records, so maybe employers can get access to the police records office? having said that, there may be a central criminal records office!

No, Data Protection Act in the UK. Only certain people can access this information and it has to be for a specific reason ie, to employ someone to work with children.

For a fee you can have a police check done on yourself, but otherwise you need the right authority as the information is protected by privacy laws.
