My backyard is 1/3 dirt, 1/3 weeds, 1/3 grass. I want to plant grass seed so I have all grass. Should I rototill the whole yard or just throw seed down in the non-grass parts?

First of all you need to get rid of the weeds by either pulling them out or you could apply a weed killer which kills the weeds but does not contaminate the soil therefore enabling seeds to be set immediately. Dig over the area (if the grass area is ok you could leave it which is probably the easiest )Level the whole area and if you have a garden roller you could roll the surface then gently rake the top of the soil to loosen slightly and make a nice fine surface. Sprinkle a good amount of seed over the area and gently rake the surface so the seeds get lightly covered. Water the area well and keep it watered because if the seed starts to sprout and then dries out it will die. You can also put some canes and strings with bits of plastic bags hanging from them across the area to scare off birds. In 2 or3 weeks the grass will begin to grow.

If you rotovate your garden you will just chop the weeds up and they will become even more! Sorry. If you want a decent lawn then there is no shortcut, you will have to remove the weeds, root and all, and THEN rotovate. Then you put some sand down and rake it into the soil lightly until the area is even, then throw your grass seed on. Always put more on than you need as the birds WILL take what they want, as you see it growing you will be able to see the barest patches which need more seed, you can then just throw some more seed onto those areas.
In no time you will have a beautiful lawn.

MY YARD WAS THE SAME EARLIER THIS SUMMER. ALL I DID WAS USE A BROADCASTER AND JUST OVERCAST IT ON TOP OF THE WEEDS, ETC. AND EVERYTHING IS COMING UP NICELY. YOU JUST HAVE TO WATER IT A LOT, AS YOU PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW. YOU CAN WEED AND FEED AFTER ABOUT 3-4 WEEKS AFTER PLANTING OR DO THAT 2 WEEKS BEFORE. SINCE I DID THE WEED AND FEED THE WEEDS HAVE DIED OFF AND THE GRASS IS TAKING OVER. UNLESS YOU HAVE NOTHING BUT WEEDS IT'S A LOT EASIER THAN DIGGING UP THE ENTIRE YARD.

make sure you buy the right grass seed for your yard, then soak the yard with water hose then through down grass seed, keep it watered this is very important, and keep the kids and animals off of the seed, shady, sunny, part shade, part sun, remember this when you go buy the seed..if you buy sunny grass mix for shade it wont grow...hope this helped
