How do you want me to answer this question, when I have heard it a 100 tomes? Dare I say Joy Division. They made your petty bands what they are today, including The Cure and U2(which by the way, the Edge took guitar lessons from Bernard Summner).

The only good response so far has been the Beatles (Blind Melon? They had what, one album before he died? It was good, but it's no basis from which to judge greatness, come on! And Nirvana, the most overrated band of all time? Agh) Anyway, the Beatles work, but as far as modern times go, I'm going to say Incubus.
