One woman owes me $2,400 she has never repaid anything. l man owes me $1400 he signed a paper that said he would repay, also my husband's son lived with us because he was laid up for jumping out a third story window when he was high. He saw a letter I got from the bank, stole my bank card and drained my account before I realized my card was missing. He also ran up a $500 cellular bill when we put him on our network. We turned off his phone, now we have no idea where he is. Should I turn him into the police? He's family. I'm the new stepmother.

You are firstly, a very gracious and forgiving family to be so generous with others. This is meant sincerely--many people would jump at the first dollar not repaid.

See a lawyer about the first two--he can set up a suit against them and the police might (again might) be called to enforce a judgment against the person (that's if the court can find them). Your son is your son--whatever you and your husband agree to goes (I noted that you said "should I turn him into the police?" and that could cause trouble with your husband if he isn't in the loop).

The above you probably already had down, but why take the chance--anyway, if you're son is underage, you can have him placed in a rehab/recovery center (not necessarily the "boot camps" people sometimes cringe, there are plenty of loving yet firm facilities).

If he is an adult, you and your husband may need to consider whether it is better for him to continue his current lifestyle which apparently includes no respect whatever for even his "loved" ones or not--if not, the police may be the only option to curtail his behavior and possibly get him some help (there are rehab probation programs available).

I would stop lending people money and take them to Judge Judy! as for your step son, the only way he's ever going to learn, is when you and his dad stop enabling him. I would definitly report him reguardless of if he's family or not. Do you think he was thinking about family when he ran up a $500 dollar phone bill and stole your ATM card and then ran off? NO! Don't worry about being the new step mom, in the end after he's been through hell and back and see's all the people he's hurt in his life, he'd probably thank you!

The question of recovery of a loan after three years can be tricky. You would certainly need some reasonable documentation to substantiate your claim, but avenues through the "small claims" should always be followed.
In relation to the theft of your card, the bank will have a 'fraud' section, and will follow up that matter for you. If you gave the stepchild access to your telephone account, then you just have to 'wear it'.
Any loans without documentation would be lost.
I would have thought that the theft of your card would have already been reported to the police.

Getting people to pay back loans is tough. You might be able to take the guy who signed the paper to small claims court, but collecting is another matter.

If you and your husband agree, you should probably report your stepson to the police, but they may not be able to do much. I'm sorry for your losses. I'm also owed money and have little hope of it ever being paid back.

Stay in control of your own life. Hire an attorney and go after all your money, assuming you have written contracts. Watch Judge Judy for more tips.
