When I was younger, my teachers told me that when you first start pointe it's really a good idea to go with a simple lamb's wool over your toes and use medicine tape to line your toes so your blisters will be minimized (on your baby toes- my second toe was always injured a lot, too). Why lambs wool for beginners? One of my teachers Pam explained you need to feel what you're doing with your feet in order to display them the right way. And even though you can't point and flex in the way you can barefoot, you want the shoes to look as much a part of you as possible.
As you get more experienced, gel inserts are really great. I loved them a lot. They protect your toes but at the same time aren't too bulky. I don't recommend the foam pad inserts. They tear, get smelly, and unfortunately sometimes bloody.
Good luck shopping. Pointe is work but it is very gratifying. Keep dancing!!

Personally, I prefer lambs wool. I know that it is a little more "hard-core" because it can hurt a little more, but I feel like I am able to articulate better through my feet when I can feel the floor. I am not able to do that when I use any other sort of padding. At least I haven't found one yet.
Good luck! It is a great honor to be able to dance en pointe!

Lambs wool or Ouch Pouches, no longer gel pads because you won't be able to experience the floor sufficient. i have been on pointe for 3.5 years, and that i only use tape and paper towels except my ft damage truly badly, in which case I swap to Ouch Pouches.

I used a tempur-pedic insert in each shoe. Your toes will still bleed, guaranteed.
