Well..in the laboratory we use serum (for the fasting blood sugar) and plasma for glycohemoglobin. Here's the rationale for that, glucose are stored and utilized in RBC's (red blood cells) and whole blood is SERUM + RBC.Most glucose then are present in the serum or plasma just waiting to be absorbed and utilized by the RBC.Hope this helps.
