The person who is going in front of the ambulance sees what vehicle is coming behind it through the mirror. The mirror shows virtual and erect image. If the word ambulance is written like this "AMBULANCE" the word will be seen in the mirror as "ECNALUBMA"(in an inverted way). So they write it in a peculiar inverted way. U can test this by writing your name and keeping it in front of the mirror and u can see how ur name will look.

It's written in mirror image, so if an ambulance is behind you and you glance in the rear view mirror, it can be read properly.

So that its easier for the driver in the front to read the sign as he is goin to look through his rear view mirror and the inverted letters are goin to seem straight for him.
