And mangomanocr's answer hints at the other dark secret: As an academic field, Philosophy sucks. It's not academia, it's self-serving drivel (with a few exceptions--environmental philosophy as a field is actually pretty interesting and mostly academic, for example.)

Do you mean academic philosophy? If so, it's dark secret is this: it's all B.S. Millions and millions of words say zilch about life - logic games of very limited minds; verbal-mental masturbation. Philosophy's and religion's dark truths are kissing cousins of illusion. Both arrogantly claim to know truth; both miss out.
Self-knowledge is the only truth we'll ever glimpse; true philosophy is wonder.

That humans suppress their feelings, and they are not all good. Inherently alot of people have deviant thought, so at our core humans are not really all that nice, we just pretend with each other to keep some semblance of peace and stability.
