The characters are superficial and stereotypical, the story seems lacking in some important areas, and most of all, it's just one tiny film in the expansive genre of "beautiful, f*cked-up girl that everyone seems crazy about for no reason whatsoever."
So, why does everyone keep telling me this is such a great film?

I'm talking about the movie with Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, Jude Law, and Clive Owen.
I hear about it all the freakin' time.

This movie is a fantastic glimpse of real relationships with characters who are real.
This movie shows us people who are at their worst...and yet strangely, it lets us draw our own conclusions about them; there is never is any judgement passed.
This movie illustrates aspects of the best relationships and the worst.
It's compelling to watch this movie about people who destroy and create relationships with each other. You can see that these people feel guilty about what they are doing, but they are unable to stop themselves and from causing each other pain. There is an emotional rawness to the movie.
It is facinating to watch people pretend to be sincere and demand the truth when they themselves are living a lie and themselves are afraid of the truth. And we watch not just the relationships fall apart, but the people. We watch them change places and roles throughout the movie..going from 'abuser' to 'victim' alternately. We watch them become the complete opposite from who they were in the beginning of the film.
This movie shows love as it often times is between people: a game. And that a lot of the times it isn't even about love between two people, but sex.
I think this movie makes the viewer think about how to know you are in love with the one you are with. There is no physical violence in the movie, but it leaves you shaken and slightly disturbed with the frankness of the diologue and emotional punches.

I agree with you. I thought the movie was slow and incredibly sleezy. Besides, it isn't much a stretch for Jude Law to play a cheater and all the other performances were annoying IMO.

I hated the movie. I watched it because of Clive Owen, but I was so disappointed. It made me sick. And it wasn't Julia Robert's most shining moment.

I loved the movie because it made some of my friends look at their significant others in a whole new way, especially the ones that thought that their girlfriends were "angels". It's a great movie in that aspect.
