What's the back story on the mentos diet coke viral flying around the Web? Did these guys work for Coke?

In other words: was this set up or sponsored by Mentos or Diek Coke in any way? How did they come to discover the explosive properties of combining the two? How widely has this been viewed? What do Coke and Menos have to say about it?

I saw that a few weeks ago for the first time. Does it really work? The video was pretty amazing. One Mentos in a liter size bottle of Coke and it's lauch city. Amazing! I'll have to try it.
