Either men with facial hair are more desirable to women, and therefore reproduce more, or facial hair has some benefit to male survival, and therefore allowed men with facial hair to reproduce more. Nowadays it's hard to see the benefit, so maybe we will start evovlving away from male hairiness, but in caveman days it must have been beneficial.

I think that the other implications of testosterone are more important (i.e. the providers for thier families, being able to hunt and lift heavy stuff are also effects of the male hormones on the body). The facial hair I believe is more of a side effect. :)
