The type you need to buy is R-134A, you cant buy any other kind anyway without a license and for a 98 econoline thats the type it takes. You can pick it up at any parts store, or even wal-mart. The intructions are on the can and it is very simple to do, takes about 5-8 minutes. The hose will only fit on the right fill valve. That takes away the chance of the can blowing up on you unless somehow(with the help of god) you get it to go on the other valve.

It's best to take the 1998 Ford Econoline to an authorized Ford dealer b/c the service dept. mechanics have been specially trained in all aspects of maintenance and repair for all Ford vehicles. Plus, if something goes wrong after the work has been completed, then, you have recourse--you can take it back to the Ford dealership who conducted the work, and they will fix it, free of charge. If, on the other hand, you take it to Jim Bob who doesn't really understand anything about a 1998 Ford Econoline, you have no recourse b/c taking it back will just result in more problems and costly repairs. It's your choice. Take it to an authorized Ford service department with knowledgeable and skilled mechanics or take your chances with a jack of all trades and a master of none.

the two you probably did no longer hear properly, or your mechanic chum is an fool! First, if it replaced into each and every of a similar, why is R12 regulated and R134a no longer? FREON is a registered commerce call for DuPont's R12. no longer the rest is FREON! R134a may be used in any gadget designed for R12 IF converted. as quickly as we first started doing conversions, the poop replaced into that each and every person seals and hoses had to be upgraded. declare replaced into the R134a molecules have been smaller than the R12 and could seep via each and every of the rubber factors. that truly did no longer become genuine. next replaced into that the mineral oil used interior the R12 structures replaced into unlike minded in R134a structures, and that each and every little bit of the oil could desire to be flushed out and artificial PAG oil is put in. A residue of mineral oil shouldn't blow something up, yet you're able to desire to get rid of all it somewhat is conceivable, and upload the right volume of R134a. observe that even in spite of the indisputable fact that everyone with money can purchase R134a, knowingly venting it to the ambience in the time of gadget restore is prohibited.

If you don't know what you are doing...don't do it. It is possible for the can to blow up on you. Please don't listen to the other answers on here...it can get you hurt. Just take it to someone that knows about it. To get it done cheap try to find a little family owned garage.
