very good question........im not really sure of the answer but i think the dog food ppl probably determine the taste by looking at the changes in the dogs' behavior when they are given a specific type of dog food. The type of dog food to which dogs respond in a good way is probably taken to be tasty.......i dont think people would taste dog food......even if they do how would they know if the dogs like what they like?? i mean do u see any humans eating bones?

well i am sure that they have scientists that have products or machinery that can test the level of acids, bases and chemicals. I suppose the more acid with carbon monoxide would give off a sour taste and be worse for the tongue, they just know what to put in, and when it says new and improved, they have added new chemicals since they consider probably better for the dog.

Well... anything can be "new"... as for the "improved", there's nothing that says it has to be better. Maybe the improvement is that it costs the company less or will sell more of the product.
I wouldn't doubt, though, that there are people who actually eat the stuff to see if it is "better" than the old stuff.
Anyway, seems like a waste because I've seen dogs eat their own puke and cat droppings. Who really knows what they like anyway.

My dog does, she is a Dog Food Scientist Specialist. She get paid 100 dollars for every bowl of food she eats. If she eats it all, then they put it on the market.

Other dogs test it. There is a series of different dogs with different foods tested and the dogs are monitored for some time after for health testing.

Dog food, by law, must be fit for human consumption. However I think they simply put two dishes down and see which is most popular with dogs.
