It depends on personal preference and whether or not you are planning to keep it forever. Personally, I prefer automatic b/c it's easier to drive and safer especially in heavy traffic or where it's stop and go traffic or if having to drive on high-rise bridges where you may be stopped on the rise. Also, when you decide to trade-in your car, money is deducted by the dealer for a manual transmission since the original selling price was discounted in the 1st place, and, if you decide to sell it outright, people expect you to sell it to them @ an extremely discounted price b/c it's stick shift. Finally, stick shift (manual transmission) does not have a long life; they usually have to be replaced quite often even if you take immaculate care of the vehicle. On the flip side, if you are planning to race the car, then, you may be wise to have a stick shift provided you are planning to modify the car anyway so that it will have a fair chance. Stick shift cars are more fuel efficient by getting 2-3 miles more per gallon than automatic cars.

Depends on a lot of factors, whether it's a coupe or a sedan. For a 'sports' car then absolutely a stick shift. Must better control, response, and overall more fun to drive. In a sedan, chances are you're a family guy or you would have gotten a coupe. In a family sedan, why drive a stick shift, at some point, you'll have to tackle the wife, kids, and other junk...

Twenty years ago, there was usually at good 4-5 mpg difference in fuel efficiency between a stick and an automatic, but now with more five and six speed transmissions out there, along with better computer systems, the automatic is about equal (if not better some times) to the stick shift, so I'm afraid the stick shifts might be seeing their last hoorah (in the U.S. atleast).

I still love stick shifts, have driven one since I don't even remember when...

Stick Shift

Sticks usually get a little better gas mileage and are less to fix if you keep it long enough for the transmission to go out. Automatics are easier to drive especially with cell phones. I purchased my first automatic car this year (I'm 31) so test drive both and see which you would feel comfortable with. Also think if you'll be in traffic a lot, it can be real tiresome having to shift constantly.

If you are going to do a lot of city driving then I would recommend an automatic, but if you live in the country then a stick shift is fun.

Don't listen to the hype on sticks saving gas mileage... most new vehicles have computer controlled automatics which are better at selecting efficient gears than your average driver. Sticks are more fun, but you also will have to change the clutch disk every 50-120k miles. Check the EPA ratings on vehicles nowadays and you'll find the automatics within 1-2mpgs of sticks.

The Honda automatic transmission have always been the low point in the make of car.
They do not have a filter in them and you have to change the fluid every year and use Honda fluid or you will be replacing the auto tranny at some point.
The sticks are much more relilable and need far less manitenence.

I learned how to drive a 5 spd many years ago. Not only does it save money on gas but also when in the market for a new car. Often dealers are looking to get rid of the cars with manual transmissions. I shopped for my last 2 cars after the summer and purchased 5 spds. I got a great deal on both autos! If you don't mind driving one, it's well worth it.

wow gee thats funny, i answered this exact question yesterday about this time. its a shame you cant search the answers or something.

Stick, period.

Stick shifts have 5 gears, usually, whereas auto has only 4.

This means that you get better gas mileage to start off with because the engine can be kept at a lower RPM.

In addition, you have much more control over engine RPM overall, so that an experienced driver can really tweak better gas mileage out of it.

In addition, lower RPM equates to less wear and tear on engine and transmission.

Aside from that, its more fun to drive... unless youre in traffic, of course.
