I've been taking prenatal vitamins as i am trying to conceive, in hopes of ensuring that when i do get pregnant my body will already be prepared with the essential vitamins/minerals etc. but i was wondering... is there anything in them that could make me sick because it is too much for an unpregnant body to handle?

nope - you can take them before, during, and after pregnancy....it is fine for you and a good idea because you don't always know right away that you are pregnant. Hats off to you for thinking ahead about your baby!

No prenatal vitamin, in and of itself, could be on the market in the U.S. with amounts of any vitamin or mineral that could make you sick. In fact, you may notice on many prenatal vitamins that the amount of the USRDA in the vitamin is below 100% for many of the included vitamins or minerals. The thing you really need to make sure you get enough of is folic acid--but you also don't want to get too much. If you are only taking a prenatal vitamin without other vitamin supplements (pills, liquids, huge amounts in certain fortified foods), you should be fine! If you are at all worried, go see your doctor (either an OB or primary care physician) and perhaps your doctor would be willing to prescribe a prenatal that you know will be safe (if you aren't already taking a prescription prenatal).

Yes, you can use prenatal vitamins before pregnancy, it's actually recommended because the folic acid helps build a protective barrier around the fetus, and having this from the start isn't a bad thing. My doctor actually prescribed some to me when he found out we were trying to conceive. Unless you eat PERFECTLY (and who actually does?) you will benefit greatly from a vitamin. If you're worried about taking in too much of something, remember that your body has incredible ways of handling excess, and a mulit-vitamin is not going to put you at dangerous levels for anything contained therein. If you're feeling nauseous after you take them, make sure you take them with food, or before you go to bed. You're not supposed to have dairy, antacids or iron supplements within an hour of taking your vitamins because it can reduce the absorption of some of the minerals in it.

I'm not sure if you are getting sick from them and that is why you are asking or if you are just worried, so I'll answer both. If they aren't bothering you, there is nothing but vitamins in them. If your body doesn't need them, it will get rid of them. If you feel ill, try switching brands. I had a problem with many of the prenatal vitamins and had to switch until I found one that didn't make me feel like throwing up.

No, just don't take more than the daily recommended dose.

I bet you could find "fertility" vitamins too, or go to a health food store and ask them about the best vitamins to take. People at places like that are very helpful, and have probably met women trying to conceive before.

They won't make you sick.. your body needs those vitamins anway. I also take kid's vitamins, the chewable kind, I take two a day, and it equals to the same as a prenatal vitamin, They are easier to take and really good for you. Good Luck.

Prenatal vitamin has some extras that regular multivitamin doesnt have, like iron. And too much iron isnt good. So, check it out and make sure it s safe, ask your doctor.

i take mulitvitamins because i too am wanting to have a baby in the future. i have to say one thing about prenatal vitamins, you need to eat and then take the pill an hour later because you will throw up. this happened to me twice already.

No doctors actually reccomend that you take them when you are trying to concieve. I wouldn't take any other vitamins with them unless your doctor tells you to because that might be an overload.
