I would definately recommend it. I can easily say that Citizen Kane is one of my favorite movies of all time. It might not appear to be groundbreaking when we watch it today, but the trends that it started are movie conventions today.
Why is it good you ask-
1. It is a political drama exploring the conflict between media and politics.
2. It is the story of a man who has everything, and yet feels empty inside, very surreal.
3. It is layered with symbolism which take more than one viewing to discover.
4. The movie is an existential argument that when we try to find out who a person is... we will end up just as we began with no real answers.
5. The beauty of the film is also that it can be interpreted in many ways... depending on the viewer.
6. The movie is artistic in the way it has been shot. The compositions of every frame and the use of depth of focus, along with some ingenious lighting.
7. There are more special effects in it than Star Wars. But they are done so subtly that one does not even notice them.
If you get to watch it on DVD, you could listen in on the commentary track to know more about why the greatest film makers of today consider it a masterpiece.

It's not as enjoyable as critics would have you believe. I guess it's more acclaimed for the fact that, for its time, it was completely ground-breaking, and the directing and cinematography were like nothing that had been seen before, and they are still relevant today. It's very dated now in my opinion, but worth a look-see all the same...try ebay or ask your local movie store to order it for you (most places will)

It gets ranked #1 because of it's significance more so than its beauty.
It is a movie that could have been destroyed but it wasn't. RKO stood up to the powers that were and survived. Had Hearst had more money they would have gone under. It also had a black listed writer and a freshman director. they give it credit for overcoming obstacles.

It is the effect it had on future films and film makers. The scope of the reach, the majesty of the camera work, the tricks of the directing.
A mystery that only the audience knows the answer to.

The only reason I can see that it's rated as such was because it was the first movie to make real social criticism. About a real person. That just wasn't done before then.
The movie itself, i think, is terrible.
