Workers go on strike when they feel they have legitimate demands or grievances, but when negotiations with management have failed. It is a last resort action to force management to meet their demands. (Management sometimes uses "lockouts" to do the same thing.)

The grievances can be low wages, wages not keeping up with inflation, poor or dangerous working conditions, a lack of health insurance, a need for new safety precautions at the workplace, difficult working hours, insufficient vacation time, etc. Sometimes, the union fears that the introduction of new labor-saving machines into the workplace will eliminate jobs. Often, it's the case that management attempts to cut wages or take back some of the benefits they had previously given workers, to help balance their books. Workers will almost always resist such take-backs (unless there is a bona fide emergency at the company). Often, a strike happens simply because the old contract expires, and they can't agree on a new contract - so the workers refuse to work without a contract and walk out.

But issues vary from company to company, and at times the cause can be a very local, specialized problem that only affects that one workplace.

Nobody WANTS to strike. Unions go on strike when they feel that they are not being compensated properly. It is their only tool for dealing with the company. As a non-union employee in my company, when the company revamped their sick leave policy, I am one major illness away from losing my job, then my home. Union members can collectively threaten to walk off the job, if the company decides to take away their benefits. This can sometimes make the company rethink their positions. United workers bargain, other employees beg.

Two major reasons:

1. Better working conditions

2. Greed.

In the beginning, most strikes were for reason #1. these days, most are because of reason #2

Two reasons: Exploitation and Suppression.
When you apply the meanings in the context of any strike, every thing falls in line. Although it may not fit the bill completely, but these two reasons stand out.
