Yahoo! and all? Is it as simple as mail or do they have acquired special licenses for that? I want to know as I wanna develop my own software, since Yahoo! won't allow SMSing after 3... I have heard somewhere that for most of the mobile companies its simply an email address attached to every number?

You have to create an account on a SMS gateway and you will pay for sending sms according to the number you send, the free 3 sms on some websites are agreements between them and the gsm networks, if you do open an account on a SMS gateway you will be able to send sms through a special protocol they will help you out setting up
