"The Effect of Computerization on Modern Society"

Starting point: A local drug store uses a scanner at the checkout counter. This is connected to a computer which not only tabulates daily sales reports but maintains an automatic inventory. When the system goes down, the employees have to WRITE DOWN the UPC code of every product sold, and calculate the sales total by hand - including determining which products are taxable. Because sales and inventory were computerized based on UPC codes, most products do not have price tags. The employees then have to look up prices. Lastly, because of dependence on the computer, most of them aren't good at even simple arithmetic.

Discuss advantages of computers in increasing efficiency vs. limitations and vulnerabilities created by dependence. Bonus points: Develop suggested methods to deal with problems created.
