Hi,
My husband cleans my jewery with hot water, a used toothbrush and toothpaste. He dabs some to the side of the sink, having water running to get hot. He thens appies toothpaste on the toothbrush.
He will clean underneat the jewery, like a ring. Cleans it under, sides and top. Rinses it off good, then dries it with a soft cloth. It shines like brandnew jewery. It works! Alot cheaper than jewery cleaner. Like to know how this works out for you.
If it's a bracelet or necklace, lay the jewery to the side of the sink while cleaning. You can get to both sides this way by slipping it over when the other side is cleaned.

Silver is best cleaned with a polishing cloth impregnated with rouge, or believe it or not, toothpaste. A good way to clean gold and diamonds is to boil in hot water with dish detergent and ammonia. This is only for hard stones however, and should not be used on pearls, opals or any softer stones.

If you've got a Kevin Jewelers or a Zales close to your house, you could go pick up jewelry cleaner from there. I'm not sure about the price, but it's great. I use my mom's for my ring.

Tooth paste worked good on my bracelet. Soaking in alcohol works too I think.
