I purchased a Dell 1300 business model, and an HP DV4000. Both are excellent, but for the money, I am really impressed by the HP! The new model is the HP 5000 series, you can get some really impressive configurations and prices through Office Depot. Go to Tech Depot.com which is owned by them, and check it out. It would be best though to buy it in the store with a person you feel comfortable with. They will have it sent to the store, go over everything, and register your warranty. I love mine! Be well, and good luck.

Any PC laptop I've ever owned has had problems with durability and reliability. I recommend the low-end MacBook, which with student discount is $1,049 and comes with built-in video conferencing. I've never had a more problem-free ownership than since I've gotten my Apple, and I wouldn't wish anything less on anyone else, especially with all the viruses and spyware out there these days. I've dropped my PowerBook twice and it's still running problem-free, dents and all (the MacBook is kevlar, so it won't dent).

As far as HP, my first laptop was a Compaq, and HP merged with them recently. They are among the best PC manufacturers, but the high end is Sony (actually more expensive than Apple). I really recommend Apple for the best balance between quality and price. It really is true you get what you pay for. And now that Apple computers run on Intel processors, you can even boot with Windows if you really have to. Mac also has all the features scheduled to come out with the next version of Windows (Vista), and another Mac OS release is planned to coincide with Vista's release which will put Macs even further ahead.

Good brands are expensive, and also those specs (speed/multimedia)... it's really expensive.

It's ok to buy like acer, or mine is ELITEGROUP from Taiwan...
