I haven't read a single answer thus far from anyone who appears to know what they are even talking about. I have been a die hard fan of Paul McCartney's since February 9, 1964 when I sat on the floor watching him sing lead on "All My Loving'" on the Ed Sullivan Show, that Sunday night.
Paul wrote some great songs while with the Beatles and he has written some great songs since 1970 while he has been on his own. He simply writes different types of songs without Lennon's acidic influence. Granted Paul McCartney writes silly love songs--that is what has made him the most popular songwriter of all time. People never tire of listening to songs about love.
Since going solo I think McCartney's greatest albums have been "Band on the Run", "Tug of War", and undoubtedly "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard." Anyone who can compose some their greatest work after their 62nd birthday has to get a tip of the hat from anyone who posesses a literate opinion. I saw Paul for the 4th time in November at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and his show was three and a half hours of nothing but great music. No profanity, no hatred, no violence or sexism needed to hold people's attention. Simply Sir Paul, his melodious voice, and his Hofner bass.
He will be remembered in the same way Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart have been remembered.

Hi Oakster - I think, like fine wine, Sir Paul has definitely improved with age (even though he was one of the geniuses behind the Beatles. My favorite cd of his (after the Beatles) is "Flaming Pie", with a tie for two great songs: Calico Skies and Little Willow. Anyone who can write a symphony, then the next moment pen a beautiful love song, then a silly or sassy song gets a standing ovation from me!

I think he's better now. Don't get me wrong, the Beatles were great but Paul McCartney seems more multi-faceted as a solo artist.

Paul was at his apex of music career with the Beatles. After that with Wings and years on solo ventures, Paul has seen better days. His being betrayed by one time pal MJ surely left impressions I'd like one day to read this memoir notes on.
Still Paul draws adoring crowds during his very rare concert appearances and will do so till "the end".
"I saw her standing there" is my fav Beatles classic.

Oh my god! Are you freakin kidding?! Is that question even legal to ask?!? That's like saying that one of the scoobies from Scooby Doo is better than the rest of the others! That is SOOO not true! They all balance each other out; each has his or her own personalities and talents. Don't get me wrong, McCartney is a genius.. but to say that he is better by himself than with the Beatles is just outrageous!

With the Beatles of course. The man was in his prime then.
As for song, post-Beatles, I like Ebony and Ivory (duet with Stevie Wonder) the best.

I cant believe the absurdity of this question- if you think Paul's better solo, than you have the absolute WORST taste in music and I feel pathetic even responding to someone who would ask such a thing
