No it is NOT true! I am sure just like some Americans don't like French some French people don't like Americans. They don't like our brashness and our politics but you can't make such vast generalizations about places. I have lived all over the place and traveled extensively and France is wonderful! I found the people to be very nice friendly, helpful and hospitable. They were not at all snobby like people say. I think if you bother to learn something about the culture and then try to follow those norms when visiting another country you will find that most people really will respect you for trying, and you will enjoy yourself more too.

Not all French people are the same. Most people of any nationality will be good to you if you treat them with respect.
Go ahead and learn french, and have fun visiting France. Most likely you won't have any problems.

Remember, there are people everywhere that will hate you for reasons beyond your control. Only the truly ignorant will bother you - but that happens in the USA too! Don't live for them, live for your self!

Bonne chance, et au revoir!

Dislike of Americans, in general, is self-inflicted by Americans. Way too many of them, when travelling in foreign countries expect the same "standard" as home-can't spend dollars;the toilet is different;why don't u speak English?;the car is too small, how long has the air conditoner been broke?,etc..
I'm 15th generation Franco-Canadian-American and I speak French. When I travel in France I get the "can't be bothered" attitude until they hear me speaking French--then I am the long lost cousin from America that gets the whole welcome package.

I lived in France for two years. They disagree with our government's foreign policy (or lack thereof), but they don't dislike the American people (although they like to make fun of Bush, but who doesn't?). Since you want to learn French, people will be eager to help you learn it correctly, as they are proud of their culture and language.

PS: I only encountered one guy the entire time I lived in France who was rude and insulting b/c I was American (he was really drunk at the time). His friends were really embarassed and apologized up and down for his behavior. As I spoke French fluently, I just told him off and ignored him for the rest of evening. Don't forget: ignorant people live everywhere.

no.
Politics and real life just sometimes don't meet.
You will be most welcome.
But like everywhere : you will meet idiots. It happens.
But I would say most people would be very interested in you and curious.
Just read about all this so-called "American-English" friendship between Blair and Bush ..and see some of the posts on here.
Some people do not know each other and do not make any attempts........any nationality for that matter.
Don't believe everything posted in here.

In March of this year we were with an American/Canadian tour group in France for a day. In that one day, they refused to serve us at a restaurant, slammed a store-front door in our faces, spat upon us - - twice. Yes, it's true that they hate Americans. Don't bother with France - go to any other European country instead.
