the office buildings in my town are half the renting price of apartments and so clean. if i got a business license and set up a nonsense little biz like selling shoe horns or something just to get in the building, but slept there at night after my real day job, would that be breaking any laws? anybody done this?

Again, the other answers given here are too specific to their areas and may not pertain to yours. Each juristiction has it's own zoning laws and some are very complicated. Many commercial zoning designations allow some form of residentail use. Most areas have many different zoning designations which may come under the commercial heading. I work in property valuation for a major metropolitan area and we have upwards of twenty different commercial designations, manyt of which also allow for some residential use. Buildings known as lofts are very popular in these areas. These buildings feature wide open indiviual spaces which can have a variety of uses. Picture the main character's apartment in Flashdance-nice open space in a building with a multitude of uses.
You need to check exactly what zoning codes allow some residential use and then you need to find building owners who will allow that use as well.

You could if you own the building, and have no where else to live. But you have to have some rooms for your personal use, and the rest for business uses, wether yoru buisness or rented to other business people.

Others may have done it, but it is illegal to reside in a building zoned for commercial use.
