Why are East Indian women afraid of dogs?

In many cultures dogs are considered "unclean" animals. Contact with one can require lots of ritual purification. In those countries, most dogs are not household pets so they tend to run wild in packs. If they get hungry enough, they will attack humans.

I have seen them turn absolutely "ridged",stiff as a board,at the sight of a small friendly dog waging its tail.

A friend of mine offered that dogs are not pets in asia,but rather a food source.
Perhaps the same applies with East Indian Women.

If they are Muslim, it could just be the idea that their families/parents told them to stay away from dogs and that turned into a "fear?" I mean, in Islam, we are to generally not keep dogs as pets, unless they are for protection of crops, livestock, a house, or for hunting purposes. And if the saliva of a dog touches us, we must clean that area 7 times with soap/water before we can pray in it because it is considered to be impure. So, it probably can't be a general stereotype, but this could be one reason as to why they react like that. And Allah knows Best. :)

Because THEY know the dogs know that they are going to eat them. Not exactly the start of a beautiful friendship. (Just kidding about the eating, but I'm like Roger Rabbit -- I can't resist making a joke.) It's news to me that they're afraid of dogs. I thought they whomped them with a stick if the dogs got out of line.
