It is not uncommon to loose your freon if it has been sitting for years as you say without use. Also your filters are probably cement by now. Clean or change the filters and you should get air circulation. That will tell whether you need to get the system recharged. No cool air = no freon. You would probably have to call an A/C Service company for a recharge.

OK, from a pro. This is a part of your home, it is worth putting a little effort into.

Instead of going with some half baked answer that you might get on here or from the next door neighbor, why don't you call a local HVAC shop to send you someone to do a walk through of your system.

It'll cost you $100 or so but then you will know right where you stand. Don't call Uncle Billie Bob's heating and lawn care, get someone from the phone book with a big add.

Check your filter . Listen to see if the compressor is kicking on. If it is low on freon , then it will not kick on and will not get cool until there is enough pressure in the system. A pressure switch shuts the compressor down so it don't burn itself up trying to compress . If the filter is clean and you don't have air circulating from the fan running then you could have another restriction in the vent system or the coils are clogged up or even froze up if the system is not filled properly. Check your breakers and click them off and back on to reset them. there could even be some breakers or fuses near the outside unit. good luck.

need to have a basic service check. the freon could be low from slowly leaking out of the seals from the compressor. there thermostat could be bad to as they go out alot. a basic a/c service check is cheap and you can find any problems.
