Frankly, I don't think you should. No matter how much "magic" or "fun" Santa is, it's still lying to your child. We don't pretend that Santa is real, and my son still has a great time at Christmas. He talks to Santa at the mall, puts out cookies for him, etc. -- he just doesn't think he's real. And that's fine with me -- I want my child to grow up knowing I can be trusted.

Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus. He is the magic that is in your heart. He is the spirit of giving, and he will always be "real" to me even though I am 49 years young. You don't have to grow up when it comes to the magic of Christmas and Santa.....all you have to do is smile and remember the wonderful feeling you had when you did believe. Even though you can't see him, doesn't mean he isn't real.
Don't you think we need a little of that in our lives? It's so sad that the children of today have very little imagination. Too much reality is not a good thing.

When I began suspecting Santa Claus wasn't real, my parents explained to me that he was the "Spirit of Christmas." In this sense, he's very real, and can indeed be everywhere on midnight Christmas Eve. As they explained it, Santa Claus is the spirit of giving, and if they are the ones to fill the stocking, then they do so moved by Spirit.
So I hold on the the thought at Christmas, that at midnight, there's a thought, a feeling of love and giving, that flashes around the world in an instant. I pause and feel it, and guess what? It's there, and it's real.

Jesus! some of these answers clearly come from bitter people ,who maybe never experienced the true magic of Christmas. We tell our kids about Father Christmas because it creates magic, and too soon will they grow up and the magic will be gone, being a child at Christmas is the greatest time of the year, because of Santa, being a parent at Christmas is like being a child again,it's magic the look on your child's face, so excited they can't speak because he's been!!the best day of the year ,he exists in our house!! SANTA RULES!!

I wonder the same thing. No idea. It's deceptive, and all kids are upset when they find out he's fake. I know I was very upset when my parents told me they were fake (even though I suspected it, since my dad's handwriting was the same as Santa's).
The only reason parents still do is because other parents do, and they don't want their kids to be the only one not believing in Santa. We need to think of some way to completely stop parents from doing this.

I agree with all you who think kids ought to know the truth about Santa, and God, and Bambi, and the tooth fairy, and Barney, and Big Bird, and that movies are just pretend. And we should make them study Mozart, and eat caviar instead of hot dogs.....and we should make them act like us...all grown up! In fact, since I live close to Disneyland...I think I will go there right now and start preaching the word to the poor misguided parents who think all they are doing is giving their children fun memories, when in reality they are setting them up for a fall. Oh, the humanity!

I totally agree. I will never LIE to my children and tell them that someone else brings their presents, I will tell them who the present is really from so they can thank that person and appreciate what they got from them. Parents say it's "fun" to believe in Santa...is it also "fun" to lie to your children? I think not.

The people that lie to their children should be ashamed. I think that's the first time the realize they can NOT trust their parents it's a horrible lesson to teach kids.

Why do we teach little kids about god when he doesn't exist?
It's about finding wonderful things to make our lives richer. The "spirit" of both of these notions are enchanting, and can make us better. It can also help us to escape from our mundane everyday lives.

The same reason you teach them about the bible. Everyone likes a fantasy...
