It is to make your chest looks better, and I believe that is serve a purpose as to one of the arousal point in your body when you have sex.
Can you imagine not having a nipple? Try to go look at yourself in the mirror and cover it with something that is the same color of your skin, and see how ugly your chest looks without them.
