These facilities vary so widely from one place to the next that it is impossible to give 'the' answer. One of the questions you have to answer is how much can you afford to pay for a retirement home? Does your uncle have sufficient income to look after this, or will the family members have to help out? There are facilities on all levels of care, from very posh to idigent level, so where he goes will depend on what level of care you can afford for him.
It's always hard to have to take a loved one from his home and move him to a retirement facility, but if he has reached the stage where he can no longer care for himself, it is a kindness to make sure that he will be looked after in a thoughtful manner.
Start by contacting the Better Business Bureau in your area, and find out which homes you should NOT consider. Then contact some of the senior day care facilities, and see which homes they recommend. And finally, check through the phone book and go visit some of the sites in person.
Good luck with this!

well first and foremost, i would never send a family member especially someone who is a "loved one" to a retirement home. with family you have to make room. why doesnt the family work out something to where someone has him for a certain amount of months, and then someone else takes him, or the amount of $ being spent on sending him to a retirement home, add an addition onto the house. how would u feel if someone dropped you off at a retirement home?, and now adays, retirement facilities dont have the best, or most skilled people working for them, read the papers.

The retirement home can be quite expensive, so it is to your uncle's advantage to not have much money. If he qualifies for Medicaid, they will pay for the retirement home. He can keep up to $2000 in his bank account, though, but not a penny more. So make sure you monitor his finances so he doesn't lose the Medicaid. You should also ask your uncle if he WANTS to go into a retirement home. A ticked-off relative isn't high on anyone's list of fun things.

Call the retirement center, and arrange a tour. Take your uncle there and see if he likes it.

well i do hope he knows you are planning this move . get in touch with his doctor.he will assess him to see if he feels he is nursing home material. it will be a hard job getting him into a nursing home as they are over full now.just keep trying and put his name down at several for accomadation. you will need to take care of his wishes in regard to his personal things in his home .ask him if he has a will made out and who is his next of kin and /or executor for his will . if it's you in both cases you will be required to dispose of his house and contents according to his will and arrange his funeral when the time comes and see that it is paid out of the sale of his home .there maybe other costs involved with the nursing home eg, extra clothing he may not have , toiletries etc . the nursing home will let you know what your obligations are .
